Peacock Calathea
Calathea makoyana
syn. Goeppertia makoyana
This calathea type grows large, round leaves with an intricate pattern. Leaves are a light, opaque green that allows dark green veins to show through. Leaves are bordered with a thin dark green margin and detailed with dark green spots on the topside and a purple hue on the underside. The overall effect is intricate and unique.
Sprig size is grown and shipped in a 2" pot.
Growing conditions
Light: Moderate, indirect light. Leaves will burn in direct light. May be okay in low light conditions, but stems will stretch and the plant will look leggy.
Water: Keep soil consistently moist.
Soil: Very particular about soil type. Use a soil with good pore space, or our custom calathea soil. Avoid soils heavy in peat, or soils that hold nutrients. Calathea mix.
Fertilizer. It can be difficult to find the right balance between nutrient burn and nutrient deficiency in Calathea spp. Fertilize only with mild fertilizers, such as liquid seaweed. Flush the soil every couple of months to remove salt build up. We do not recommend using general purpose fertilizer or applying a full dose of fertilizer to this plant.
Native to Brasil.
Humidity: Prefers a humid environment. If the environment is not humid, ensure a consistently moist soil.
Pests: Susceptible to most common house plant pests, especially spider mites and thrips.
